Setting Up Utilitiesin Bangkok
Everything you need to know about electricity, water, internet, and mobile phone service—from providers and costs to step-by-step setup instructions.
How do I set up utilities in a Bangkok condo?
For most condos, electricity and water are already connected—you simply pay monthly bills to your landlord or building. For internet, contact True, AIS, or 3BB directly (3-7 days setup). For a mobile phone, buy a SIM at any 7-Eleven with your passport (instant activation). Total monthly utilities for a 1-bedroom typically run ฿3,000-6,000.

Electricity
Electricity in Bangkok is supplied by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA). In condos and apartments, the connection is already set up—you don't need to apply for service. You simply pay your monthly bill based on usage.
Important: How you pay depends on your arrangement. Some landlords include utilities in rent, some bill you separately at MEA rates, and some charge a markup. Clarify this before signing your lease.
MEA Electricity Rates (2025)

Subsidized residential rate

Note: Actual bills include service charges and VAT, making effective rate ~฿4-5/unit.
Typical Monthly Usage
1-2 people, moderate AC
฿2,000 - ฿4,000
AC 4-6 hours/day
Heavy AC usage
฿4,000 - ฿8,000
AC running most of day
Minimal AC (fans only)
฿800 - ฿1,500
Rare but possible
Family (3BR)
฿4,000 - ฿10,000
Multiple ACs, appliances
Tip: Set AC to 25-26°C instead of 20°C. Each degree lower increases electricity consumption by ~10%.
Water
Water in Bangkok is supplied by the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA). Like electricity, water is already connected in condos. Bills are relatively low—typically ฿200-500 per month for normal usage.
The MWA rate is approximately ฿18-20 per unit. Some landlords charge ฿25-35 per unit—technically not allowed, but common. Water is rarely a significant expense compared to electricity.
Water Quality Notes
Safe for showering and brushing teeth
Tap water meets bathing standards
Don't drink tap water
Use bottled or filtered water for drinking
Drinking water is cheap
฿10-20 for large bottles, or get a filter

Thailand has excellent fiber internet infrastructure. In Bangkok, you'll typically get faster speeds at lower prices than Western countries. The main providers are True Online, AIS Fibre, 3BB, and NT.
Before choosing: Check which providers are available in your building. Some condos have exclusive arrangements with one provider. Ask the juristic office or your neighbors.
